This
is the front of my favorite mission, Mission San Jose in San Antonio,
Texas. The balcony casts a large shadow, causing the sculptured
doorway to really jump out at you. I love all the textures in this
building. This painting is featured in the September, 2002 issue
of American Artist Magazine. It also won awards in the 2000
National Watercolor Society Juried Exhibition, plus awards in both
the 1999 Southwestern Watercolor Society and the 2000 Associated
Creative Artists Award Show.
Carolene
Herbel's love of folk art and New Mexico are reflected in her
paintings. Living in Northern New Mexico with its many adobe mission
churches on Indian Reservations is a constant inspiration to her.
Their simple beauty is countered with the elegant beauty of Native
Americans and their culture. Carolene's 25 year career in clothing
design in historic old town Mesilla New Mexico is where she utilized
highlights of Southwestern design in her popular clothing line, still
